CRESTWOOD ARTISTS GUILD
Augusst 2010
Are you a newcomer to Whiting?  An artist?  Looking
for a group of people who share your love of art?  Want
to learn more about painting?  Join us – we are The
Crestwood Artists Guild. We meet every Friday at
Hilltop Hall.  Visit us to ask any question on art or to
express your interest in joining our Guild.  Friday
morning sessions begin with portrait painting. Portraits
are professional quality and free to our sitters to take
home.   Would you like to sit for us? See our poster ad
in the SUN for information.  We are involved in all
kinds of activities during Friday get-togethers: do-it-
yourself paint-alongs critiques, workshops or demos by
artists locally, nationally and internationally known.
The demos and workshops are either free of carry a
minimal fee and open to all members; nonmembers pay
a small fee plus yearly dues.  We have still-life setups on
the second Friday of each month at noon.  Books and
videos from our
Instructional library are yours to take them home, study
and return. Business meetings are every other month:
remaining 2010 meetings are July 23, September 24 and
November 26. Our business meetings are about various
subjects; shows, annual picnic, and travel plans. The
Crestwood Garden Club always makes room for us on
their bus trips and occasionally we plan a spontaneous
carpool trip to a local art museum or event.

The June Outdoor Show held at the Crestwood
Marketplace was lots of fun and successful to many in
sales.  The best part of this annual event is meeting our
neighbors and talking art. Honey Stapleton will do it
again – a signup sheet has been distributed for the Fall
show at Shamrock Gardens on Saturday, September 18.
Same setup as last year – delicious refreshments
supplied by Shamrock, crisp weather and clear day
prayed for by all.  Our Guild picnic was held at the end
of July, Ruth Ventura did all the planning.  Diane
Caravello made up two baskets of art supplies as door
prizes.  “The Right Side of the Brain” a demo given by
Richard Maxwell went over big and Eva Woodle’s
collage demo/workshop was very helpful and inspiring.
Our Guild’s exhibit at the new Community Center in
the Whiting Shopping Center (Foodtown) went over real
big.  Diane Caravello arranged for a July show for the
Artists Guild at the Whiting Reading Room – we hope
you got a chance to see that one.  Diane also had her
own successful solo show at the Reading Room.

Details for the 43rd Ocean County Senior Citizens
Annual Juried Contest and Exhibition are – receiving
Monday August 2 9AM to Noon; exhibit runs until
Friday August 13 when awards will be presented at a
reception held from 10AM to Noon; removal immediately
following the reception; all at Ocean County College.
First place works of art will be exhibited at the New
Jersey State Show from Monday, September 27 –
Thursday, October 28 at Meadow Lakes in East
Windsor.  Closing reception and awards ceremony is on
Friday October 29 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Visit “Crabfest
2010” on the grounds of Lacey United Methodist
Church – 203 Lacey Rd – Forked River – enjoy the great
food and the Art and Craftshow.  Many of our members
exhibited last year.  We’re sure this one will be well
attended; date is Saturday, August 7, noon to 4PM.

Our paintings are on view at Hilltop Hall, The Bank,
Kimball Medical Center  & Somebody CARES.   If you
are a business owner & would like our artwork
enhancing your office or store, contact us at Hilltop and
we will arrange an ongoing or one-time show.  Mary E.
Kennedy’s paintings will be the solo show in Hilltop’s
library for the next six months.  In 2009 we had a single
day show at Stop & Shop and at their request are
planning another in November 2010.
We had such great success with the joint Artists
Guild/Camera Club show a couple of years ago that we
are going to do it again for October/November.  All
photos have been distributed to the artists for their
interpretation. Manchester Library hanging
requirements are – no larger than 18” x 24” framed, use
Plexiglas and wired in back.

We all missed Gerry Bopp when he moved from
Whiting due to failing health and now, sadly, report his
passing.  His big, bold paintings were amazing – so
colorful!

Come to a Friday session.  We have information on
current and future doings at many East Coast
museums.  Just an example – there are exciting
overlapping exhibits of hundreds of Picasso’s works at
the Met and MOMA.  The Phily has an exhibit “Late
Renoir” and the Brooklyn Museum has “Andy Warhol –
the Last Decade”.  Both exhibits cover the later, most
innovative and prolific times of the artists’ lives.
Another special exhibit at the Phily is “Henri Matisse
and Modern Art on the French Riviera”.  “Splash – The
New Jersey Watercolor Association” present a show at
the Noyes until August 29.  The masterful paintings
represent the finest examples of works in watercolor
from across the state.  Applications and paperwork for
exhibits, contests, workshops, demonstrations and
classes at all local art guilds and associations are
available.

Check out CYBERGAFFER.ORG.  New galleries
featuring our artists are entered often.  Thanks to Tom
Mooney for maintaining CYBERGAFFER which
includes several of your Crestwood clubs. The
Crestwood Artists Guild also publishes its events in the
brochures and on the websites of “Out & About”,
“Discover Jersey Arts”, in the Asbury Park Press
calendar section, and “Hometown Happenings” on
WOBM radio.
